The project involved crafting an innovative shoe storage solution for a couple with two young children. The design needed to balance ample storage space for future needs with a rugged construction capable of withstanding the demands of a busy hallway environment.

The structure is built on a robust steel frame, meticulously welded for strength and stability. It has been painted black and finished with a durable lacquer to ensure longevity and resistance to everyday wear and tear. To further enhance the functionality, the shelves are made from birch ply slats, also lacquered for easy cleaning, addressing the practicality needed for a family setting.

The top surface consists of walnut veneer MDF, which provides an elegant touch while maintaining durability. Instead of using conventional edge banding, the design incorporates a series of compound mitres along the edges. This choice not only prevents delamination but also eliminates the possibility of catching clothes or shoes on protruding materials, demonstrating a thoughtful approach to both aesthetics and user experience.

Upon completion, the piece was carefully wrapped and packaged for shipment. It was sent via a reliable courier service, ensuring safe delivery to Shrewsbury. This project successfully combines style, function, and practicality, making it a fitting addition to any home.

Media Console Design for Glasgow Client

This media console is designed specifically for a repeat customer in Glasgow, ensuring continuity in quality and design preference. The carcasses are constructed with Hidrofugo, recognised for its durability and moisture-resistant properties, and painted in the deepest black available to create a striking foundation.

For the doors and worktop, we are utilising oak-veneered MDF, enhanced with an intense black precolor that complements the overall aesthetic. The finish is achieved through a meticulous oil application, providing a rich texture while allowing the natural beauty of the wood to subtly shine through.

This media console effectively balances modernity and elegance, making it an ideal addition to the customer's living space. The combination of materials and finishes not only adds a sophisticated look but also offers functional durability suitable for everyday use.

The customer renovated an old sunroom to create a large space for their kitchen. After a few iterations, we settled on this arrangement.

All plywood cabinets as standard, with furniture linoleum applied to the cabinet doors. Integrated fridge freezer and dishwasher. Worktop is Mirostone, Lotus Temple, with a full-height backsplash and sink.

The cooker hood was made to complement the design, painted in Farrow and Ball ‘Strong White’.

I recently added the shelves above the splashback. These were made from some of the lintels removed during the renovations.

Designed with storage in mind, we have cabinets below specifically to accommodate folders… and wrapping paper. Plenty of shelving above for books as well as objet d’art. There is also a desk attached with a solid oak tapered leg I made specifically. Finished with knurled brass t-bar handles.

Installed this media/display unit for a customer in Edinburgh. An avid vintage shoe collector, he needed somewhere to display his favorite shoes as well as house his TV, etc. Walnut veneer finished with a satin lacquer and lit with LEDs in specific areas. Ready to be filled with the collection.

Contacted by a client who needed a door made to match the existing four-panel doors in the house. However, the door in question was only 1400mm x 600mm. Originally a coal store in the flat, it had been repurposed as a pantry and needed a door that would fit the Victorian feel of the property. Luckily, we had a donor door in stock, so we were able to use that, which meant the patina matched the other doors. It's always best in these situations to try and find an old door rather than fake it with new wood.

Handcrafted serving tray, meticulously made from oak. Featuring kerf bent corners and lovely accents of Iroko. Originally created as a gift for a family friend in Fife to present to her husband.

The carcasses of the kitchen are crafted from durable poplar plywood, while the doors and frames are meticulously fashioned from Hidrofugo MR MDF. The rich blue hue adorning the cabinetry, sprayed in-house with Farrow and Ball's 'De Nimes' paint.

For the countertop, we opted for the sleek 'Sidewalk' surface from seamlessly complemented by the 'Saso' sink. This sink, ingeniously designed to blend with the solid surface material, creates a seamless visual continuity.

Managing this project entailed collaboration with esteemed local tradesmen. The result? A breathtaking kitchen that exceeds our client's expectations

These radiator covers were borne of carte blanche. The client said they needed covers but couldn’t find anything they liked. I took on the challenge to design and build something. I wanted to create something unique and unlike the common radiator cover look. It’s a fairly newly finished house with a clean look. I wanted to keep them modest with clean lines. I personally love the look of curved edges in furniture so I tried to use that as a jumping off point for the design. I went down a few different routes with respect to how I would actually realise the design. In the end I used flexible plywood, laminated around a form to give me the shape I desired. Once they were secured to another frame we had a radiator cover.

Primed and sanded ready for the homeowner to paint. Held to the wall with button -fix for easy removal but not too easy for the toddler!

These garage doors, made from Meranti, were designed to fit with the aesthetic of the neighbourhood. The home owner had recently renovated the property and enlarged their garage which necessitated new doors. The doors now match closely the existing garden gates.

High level cupboard to fit under two existing cupboards with a rail underneath for the coats. One freestanding drawer unit with Mirostone top. I had fun with the shoe racks. I opted to make them from 18mm ply, on edge, makes for a really lovely statement piece. Each section was made in a jig before they were all fixed together. Even though it’s just meant to take shoes and boots, it could be beefed up to be a bench quite easily.

Mid-century modern inspired bookcase and storage for a client in Edinburgh. This wide corridor wasn’t being utilised well so the client asked me to design something to fit the space and make as much use of it as possible. Being a fan of “MCM”, we landed on this design. Made from walnut veneered MDF, I welded up some shelf supports in order to get the desired look. Very pleased with the grain matched door fronts.

I was asked by April & Johnnie @renovating_keepers_cottage to design and build a sauna for the garden. After extensive research, we finally homes in on this design.

The outside is clad in Scottish pine which has been charred à la Shou sugi ban, a natural way to preserve the timber common throughout Japan. We opted for an EDPM rubber roof for longevity and trimmed the edges with lead.

The interior is made entirely of Thermowood, a modified timber especially suited to saunas. A large glass door and window allow a lot of natural light in however there is also a ring of LEDs around the ceiling to provide more light in the evening.

The wood fired stove from Harvia is the focal point of the sauna and heats the space up beautifully. Small and compact to fall within permitted development regs, this sauna adds a whole extra layer to the enjoyment of the property.

It was an involved design process, working within the regulations, but the final outcome is certainly worth the effort. The material choices work well together and the overall look and feel sits well within the garden.

Large bookcase with bench storage and ladder in Gartmore. Additionally there is another smaller bookcase and side table in the same room. Plenty of storage for this family.

Plywood and MDF carcass painted in Purbeck Stone. Ladder is white oak to match the countertops and the nook is fitted with LEDs to illuminate what will become a map wall.

The space wasn’t really being utilised very well so I tried to squeeze as much useful storage in as possible. Drawers at the bottom and a shelf above makes them more useful and still allows enough hanging space.

Built in/ fitted wardrobes for a customer in Newton Stewart. Replacing the 1970’s originals with a more efficient use of the available space. Three sections running as deep as they could back under the coomb allowed for very deep drawer storage. Included was a pull out tray organiser for accessories and shoes.

Recently completed, statement office storage in birch ply and a carcass of Craig and Rose paints Pullman Green. Space for LPs and a stereo to make the work day easier! At the opposite end of the room I added a series of access doors to hide the heating system and other utilities as well as sneak in another cupboard.

I made and installed this kitchen in August in Edinburgh for a lovely client. The house has now been fully renovated and it is a stunningly beautiful property.

We undertook a thorough design process to come up with a solution which enhanced the space and provided everything that the client had wanted over the years.

All the carcasses are made from birch ply from @falconpaneluk and fully lacquered. All the doors and drawer fronts are made from Hidrofugo MR MDF, the best you can get in my opinion. We didn’t want a face frame but we did want beading, so all the beading was applied to the fronts themselves, there then ensued a formidable amount of sanding once it came to painting. For the worktop we chose mirostone solid surface Lovina, a wonderful material to work with, especially combined with their Colne stainless steel sink.

I also made the cooker hood cornice and corbels, which frames that wall so well.

The cabinets on the opposite wall are designed to look like a dresser but offer more space and benefit from not being one single piece of furniture. This worktop is oak with a lambs tongue profile around the edge and finished in wood wax finish. Integrated into this unit was a bespoke spice rack made from Iroko.

In the utility, , we have an almost six metre long run of Mirostone Madison Avenue worktop, seamlessly joined. This space had to be large enough for all sorts of jam making and preserving, so we made sure to add some deep storage drawers and vegetable racks. These drawers were left as exposed birch ply but with removable Iroko slats.

Three sets of Iroko garage doors. These were to replace the galvanised doors which had become damaged and faulty. Solid Iroko all mortise and tenon construction with checked overlay between each set. Adjustable hinges at the foot of each one to help overcome the differences in the precast concrete. Finished with teak oil. Heavy.

I was approached to make ten presentation cases for a limited edition whisky which was being auctioned with the proceeds being split between The Falklands Veterans Foundation and The South Atlantic Medal Association.

At auction, 176 bottles have so far been sold with around £28,000 raised.

Ladder and rail for a client in Glasgow. We couldn’t find an existing bracket that would fit the narrow gap between the cupboards so I made them to fit and polished all the metalwork before a coat of lacquer. The ladder is made from Meranti and ready for the client to paint.

Floating shelves in both alcoves and a made to fit tv stand with space for a sound bar and other consoles etc.

All made from MDF and sprayed in Farrow & Ball Wimborne White The shelves are made of two pieces that are sandwiches around a batten screwed to the wall. Allows for a secure fixing without needing any fixings through the finished surface.

Recently completed for a return customer this birch ply bookcase. Made to fit a wall in the living room, this is made entirely from birch ply and all the fixings are invisible and strong. Finished in clear lacquer. A really simple but effective design with masses of storage potential.

Finally completed on these matching alcove units. These units consist of bases made from birch ply and shelves of MDF. The shelves are extra chunky to give them enough strength to make the span without ever sagging.

Return visit to Corvisel House to install a pair of wardrobes in their children’s bedroom. We designed them so that they were future proofed for when the boys were older but also so they can access a good portion of them now.

I was approached by an architect I had worked with previously to design a kitchen for a new build house in Crossmichael, on the banks of Loch Ken. The worktop is Durasein solid surface. It had to be formed around the column in the island, which was interesting. Being able to invisibly seam it was beneficial. Along the wall the up stand is coved to form a single piece.

New conference table top for Axis Mason, Glasgow

The existing top was cut down to size and the new one placed on top. Made from one sheet of 18mm birch ply with additional strips around the edge to make up the thickness and hide the old top.

This presentation case was for a client to gift back to the company @northstarspirits as a birthday present.

A commissioned table made in steel, plywood and linoleum. The base is 50mm box section with a shadow gap created using two pieces of 40mm angle. Apart from grinding down the welds, the finish is just the raw steel lacquered to prevent rusting. The top is made from 24mm birch ply

Bespoke kitchen for a renovation project in Durisdeer. Birch ply carcasses and MDF for the doors and drawer fronts. Sprayed cornforth white. I’m especially pleased with how the corbels turned out, even more happy they went in first time!

Ledger door made to replace a rotted one in a local basement. New seals all round to keep the draught out!

For return clients in Dumfries, an oak infill for the stairs. The trend for removing the panelled staircase walls in the 90’s has flipped to the more aesthetically pleasing and sensible infill. This had to be demountable in case anything big had to go upstairs or through the front door. Solid as a rock but removable.

Quite simple snack display for a return client. Made from oak veneered MDF and then finished with Rubio Monocoat.

A large bookcase/media unit - a mixture of MDF, painted in Little Greenes Canton. The oak veneered parts were finished in Nordic Blue. I was particularly happy with how the ladder rail turned out, it all clipped together first time.

Completed for a friends holiday home in Leven where they needed an occasional bed. This folding bed in a bench takes a standard uk mattress but folds up into an easily stored unit which doubles as a bench. Made from 18mm birch ply and dimensional timber. Everything folds or is hinged in a way that it all fits inside the bench for storage.

A new linen cupboard in a bathroom for a local client. Making use of a space by the water tank to create a small chest of drawers and shelving. All hidden behind a pair of mirrored doors. Finished in Farrow and Ball - Off White.

These poseur tables were made for Claxtons Spirits in Dalswinton, Dumfries and Galloway. These tables will spend a lot of time on the road at trade shows etc.

Made from staves and a single wide board of American white oak for the tops.

Two benches and three shelving units. All made from 24mm thick birch ply. Using Farrow & Ball - Railings watered down significantly to dye the surface of the ply and then spray finished with matte lacquer to protect it.

This was a simple job to remove an old freestanding wardrobe and replace it with a new built in which matches the existing built in. All made from MDF and spray painted.

This has been a fairly large job consisting of all the cabinetry in 2 rooms. One room has a large display case to archive the whiskey the company produce plus an open bar, fridge/sink area and a bench/ radiator cover.

A bespoke oak conference table. Designed to sit 10, this American White Oak table is 2.6m long and has legs shaped so that the negative space inside is the same shape as the labels used by the company. A small detail but a nice nod to its location and owners.

Installed a shiny new barbers pole for a local client. Pressure treated timber finished with exterior gloss. Should attract more attention to the shop now!

A new display case for a client’s Lego models. Made from MFC. All bespoke to show off this impressive collection.

After lots of discussions and drawings and work, this bespoke bookcase and tv console are safely in their new home.

Made from oak veneered mdf and finished in waterborne lacquer. The metalwork is all steel which was brass leafed to add a touch of mid century modern. The TV console is designed to sit at an angle to the wall to best fit the room and give the best view of the TV from the corner sofa.

Five social distancing screens for Cup Tea Rooms / Gin 71 at Virginia Court, Glasgow for their reopening after the Covid lockdown. Made from Baltic Birch plywood with floral display and integrated LED lighting. Great interior impact for government requirements.

Finished this shed this month for a couple in the next village. Great size and ideal to store all those bits and bobs for the garden in a nice organised space…. or turn it into a man cave.

Raising the bar! The outdoor bar project is complete. . 2m wide, 1m deep and 2m tall, all pressure treated timber except the bar which is treated with preservative because we wanted a nicer finished piece of wood to rest a pint on. Shelving added along the back wall and underneath the bar, felt roof. Pint Please!

Latest project complete for a return customer. A stylish set of drawers to match the bedside cabinets. Good size drawers with pull handles. Excellent storage piece.

Aaaaand we’re back, sort of. After what feels like the longest weekend ever, I’m back in the workshop. Over the course of the lockdown I received lots of enquiries about commissions and the list is sufficiently long enough now that I can justify going back to work. Although what I do hasn’t changed, I’ve had to look at how I deliver the finished pieces. For the time being I’m just working in the workshop and preparing jobs ready for when it is safe and socially acceptable to deliver them.

So, to ease me back in to the world of work, a simple bookcase commission for some friends. They recently became parents and needed somewhere to put all his encyclopaedias and copies of Shakespeare.

A small job for Henderson Art Shop in Edinburgh. They needed to revamp the corner where customers choose frames for their artwork.

I made a solid oak worktop and boarded the walls for the display, doubling the space they have to work on.

Matching pair of bedside cabinets delivered to a client in Edinburgh. Made from steel and oak. The client needs access to a medical device through the night so there had to be a hatch of some description, so this is what I came up with.

Aptly finished on Burns Night, a bookcase and whiskey display with integrated desk. All the shelves and the desk were made from barrel staves. Carcasses from Oak veneer MDF. Everything sprayed with Morrells Wood Finishes waterborne lacquer. The support for the desk is a steel hoop, as a nod to how barrels are constructed. The tiers along the top for the whiskey have integrated remotely operated LED up lighting. Push-to-open drawer under the desk and a small cupboard as well.

In total I used 9 barrels from a local whiskey bottling company. All the staves has to be trimmed to width, cleaned front and back and then steamed and formed before fastening them together, then flatten them and finally cutting them to the correct dimensions. I’d say 75% of my time on this job was spent working on just the staves. End result looks stunning.

Alcove Shelving and storage made in Southern Yellow Pine to match an existing unit in the same room. Interior and shelves painted in Dulux - heathlands to match the walls, spray applied using Morrells Wood Finishings.

New pantry cabinets and shelves. All in moisture resistant MDF with adjustable shelves in the base units. All ready for a splash of paint. This will be a very well organised pantry.

Last element of the kitchen refurb - completed and installed. Large freestanding kitchen dresser made to match the existing look of the kitchen. Fitted with Blum push-to-open runners and finished in Little Greene pea green paint. Birch ply and poplar construction. Sturdy and fits well in the kitchen.

This started out as a simple job to replace hinges on some of the cabinets and morphed into painting all the cabinets, making new doors and adjusting the shelving around the fridge. All professionally sprayed painted. All in all a really good way to revive a much loved kitchen.

It’s not often John Malkovich calls and asks for a new door... this was an unusual request, make a four panel door for an under-the-stairs cupboard. The brainwave was finding a donor door to match the age of the existing pine doors and that also offered the right style of moulding.

This installation was the culmination of busy months designing and building. For the new Stack & Still in Glasgow Fort I built a bespoke 3 metre long room divider, a 9 metre long wall that the booth seating was fitted to and a new counter in front of the kitchen. In addition to this I also applied a copper leaf finish to the top of the existing booth seating.

Up to Stirling to install these bookcases. I gave the client a few options regarding materials and they chose to go with birch ply and keep the layers of veneer visible. I love working with such good quality plywood. Finished in waterborne lacquer.

When the owner of Gin 71 in Glasgow decided to renew the old bar he asked me to come up with a design that would better accommodate how the bar was used now. After speaking with the staff about how they used the space and what they felt did and didn’t work, I was able to come up with a design that integrated all the storage they needed plus a way of making the work flow better for the staff. The final product sits beautifully in the space, a clean and welcoming design.

When Julia & David bought a new house in Strone, north of Dunoon, they asked me to strip out the old kitchen and a partition wall to make way for a new kitchen. We didn’t have a lot of room for the kitchen so it was important that the space was used thoughtfully. By making the cabinets from scratch I was able to work them around the varying wall depths and accommodate all the new plumbing that was needed. They ended up with a lovely space that was both functional and included all the amenities they requested.

The clients requested a new, modern, style of shelving for their penthouse apartment. I designed a bracket and fabricated 25 of them to support some locally sourced oak shelves. Once installed they gave the client a wonderful wall of shelves.

After installing a new, wider, fridge freezer the client needed a new cupboard above the fridge freezer. I was able to match the design of the existing kitchen cupboards, however, there wasn’t enough cornice left and the profile was discontinued. So I set too with a gouge and sandpaper and produced a replacement length of cornice to wrap around the new cupboard and blinding panel.

The client was in need of a soundproof door for a home studio, more to keep the noise out of the studio whilst they were recording. I designed a solution for them that made use of some clever hardware and good old fashioned joinery. The final door had an elegant, modern oak clad design. Along the corridor the old cupboard door was in need of a revamp, so we clad it in oak, matching the design of the studio door.

Naomi runs a studio and performance art space in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. Recently she removed an old anteroom in the corner of her main space. This left a difference in the floor height and a recess in the wall. She asked me to bring the floor up to the same height and level it off. With one eye firmly on the budget we opted to use plywood for the floor, mainly because the existing floor will be sanded at a later date and the whole area painted. After this part was complete the next step was to find a way to make a wall which covered the recess but could be moved out of the way. We went back and forth on the design and finally settled on a sturdy series of braces which would have 9mm plywood screwed directly to them. Once this was assembled we were able to add a bench to the back of the frame which hid the counterweights. By using some heavy duty castors the wall could be moved all around the studio. Once of the main challenges was that the recessed wall was running out, so it was deeper at one end than the other. This meant the braces diminished in depth as they went along the wall. Also having to avoid the sink against the wall and drainage meant that the braces were positioned at uneven intervals. Finally we added shelves to the wall, raised the fridge off the ground to clear the braces and added racking to store the folding seats. 

When an Edinburgh New Town resident approached me asking to build them a full height, full width bookcase for their flat, I couldn’t say no. After a lengthy design process I started work on assembling the carcasses in my workshop before transferring to site. The cupboards had to hold several large format books and files whilst the shelving had to be adjustable to accommodate the vast range of books they had accumulated. They also requested a series of double sockets along the base and a shelf for the printer which could slide out. A very complicated job, but one that complimented the room well once it was finished.

I was approached by an architect who was working with a lovely local couple to build their new house. I was asked to produce a pair of wardrobes from his designs. The wardrobes were made in MDF and poplar to fit snugly under the coomb of the new bedrooms.

A couple in Glasgow recently wanted to add cupboard space in alcoves either side of their fireplace. They had papered the wall with a rather lovely wallpaper and wanted to add shelves without damaging the wallpaper. Over the space of a few days I added the cupboards and built a framework for the shelves so that they would span the gap without any fixings through the wallpaper.

When I made my first site visit it was clear that the area under the stairs was underutilised. The shape of the staircase meant that there was a large surface area that couldn’t be easily accessed or used. By boxing in the whole area we created a walk-in cupboard that took advantage of all the available space. After a very lengthy session measuring all the dimensions of quite a complex shape; I cut all the panels in the workshop and transported them to the flat. I offered up each panel and plumbed it before screwing a batten to the floor and then attaching the panel to the batten. The panels were also braced to the steelwork of the staircase for added strength. I had to create a small access door at the back of the cupboard to allow the homeowner access to the window at the rear. By filling in each riser of the stairs we fully enclosed the cupboard and created a unique and useful space.

I was trained in theatre, and spent years working in the industry. this means that when I am faced with a tight deadline and a huge amount of work, I’m right at home! The added benefit of this background is that every job had to be approached with creativity and a sense of optimism. This means that when I take on your project, I’ll be coming at it from a completely different angle.

Theatre was my first love and always will be and I would be happy to quote for the set design and/or construction for your show.

One of the areas I am most excited about in my new venture into self-employment is designing and building bespoke furniture, beautifully crafted items for your home or business. Everybody uses it every day so why should we be content with sub-standard design? There is a place for good design and comfortable, ergonomic furniture in all our lives.

Prop construction was a mainstay of my work for a long time. I often had to design very odd props to satisfy the Directors needs or undertake a large proaction run of specific items for a show.
